US president Barack Obama, in a written statement, is urging Gaddafi to step down to avoid further casualties. The statement came shortly after rebels streamed through the Libyan capital city of Tripoli.

Taking a vacation on an island near Boston, Obama asks the Libyan opposition to preserve the remaining government institutions and commit to pursuing real democracy after decades of rule by Gaddafi. He also says his country will continue to stay in close contact with the National Transition Council. The NATO alliance authorized formal planning for post-Gaddafi Libya last week. The US, Britain, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates are to discuss "day-after" planning in Dubai this week.
