Tripoli suffers severe damage from conflict

08-29-2011 08:36 BJT

The Libyan conflict has taken its toll on the capital city. Tripoli has endured heavy fighting and frequent NATO bombardments over the past months. Life is tough for the city's people, many of whom are still searching for relatives who went missing in the fighting.

Brigade thirty two in Salahadin. this was the scene of the last stand.

The proud eagle sits over the gate, but Gaddafis crack troops are gone.

Today fighters from Misrata marked this territory as their own.

After breaking down the gates late on Friday night a brief firefight and Gaddafis forces fled.

Inside nothing much remains of the soldiers known throughout Libya as the best of the best

A few sacks of uniforms never worn no-one wants these now. Empty ammunition cases too…the rebels have fueled their fight with vast amounts of weapons and supplies taken from Gaddafis camps. But this wasn’t just their fight

The rebel fighters now have full control of the capital…this was the last thorn in their side…And Gaddafi’s image has been banished for

good.

And then has we walk through, we are beckoned out.

There’s been a gruesome discovery nearby an ambulance leads the way.

Down a dusty dirt rack, in Abu Salim district a makeshift mass grave.

Seventeen bodies some bound local residents, not affiliated to either side.

This man had been searching for his Brother. He’d just discovered him here.

Clearly executed the corpses left in the dirt.

They say it was the work of the retreating Gaddafi troops, but nobody understands why.

The pointlessness of it seems to add to the grief.

But those here would say they didn’t die in vain martyrs to the cause.

And with all Gadafi’s forces banished from the Libyan capital, crowds of curious locals have come to see the Palace that was hidden for so long.

The rooms destroyed by the fight. the walls daubed with graffiti.

This man told me that the Libyan people had reclaimed this house as their own the former owner scuttled away like a rat.

Outside the memento’s of a fallen dictator pictures of Brechnev from his personal photo album.

In the courtyard the fighters loose of rounds, but the gunfire now is the sound of victory…in a city that is looking forward to peace.
