Eid shopping gains momentum in Pakistan

08-29-2011 13:59 BJT

The religious festival of Eid is approaching. In Pakistan a large number of women shoppers and young people are busy finalizing their shopping lists. Almost every shopping mall and market in Islamabad is packed with customers. Our correspondent, Danial Khan, takes a look at preparations for the festival.

A woman takes more interest in shopping for Eid. Women start their shopping normally two weeks before the event, as they have to prepare dresses, buy jewelry and other accessories to color their religious festival with traditional zeal.

Most of the businesses especially of beauty parlors, boutiques, bangles, henna, tailoring and others boom ahead of Eid.

Fatima, customer, said, "Shopping, a lot of shopping, shop around."

The illuminated shopping malls, displaying stalls of colorful bangles, jewelry and henna outside the shops are attracting the buyers, but many feel that due to Pakistan's internal problems they will not be celebrating the festival wit a great passion and fervor.

A resident said, "Pakistan is facing a lot of problems including target killing and bomb blasts and floods, there is a lot of inflation as well. We will celebrate this eid with a lot of simplicity with our family members."

A resident said, "The prices have gone sky high, we have not seen many customers in the market compared to last year."

Despite rising inflation and escalated prices of the garments, shoes and other accessories, eid shopping is registering upward trend in the markets.

Stringent security measures have also been taken in and around the markets to avoid any untoward incident, as Pakistan has seen many terrorist attacks in the past during the month of Ramadan.

Despite the current law and order situation in the country hundreds of enthusiastic shoppers are heading to the market to prepare for Eid-ul-Fitr. But many say that they will not forget the suffering of people in the country and they will be celebrating their Eid with great simplicity.
