Typhoon Nanmadol is heading towards southeastern Chinese mainland after dumping about half a meter of rain in southern Taiwan. Wide swaths of agricultural land on the island have been flooded and some 8,000 people have been evacuated.

Though downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm on Monday, Nanmadol still triggered several mudslides in Pingtung county. It is located in the land-slide prone south, where Nanmadol landed. There were no immediate reports of casualties. However, disruption to everyday life was extensive.

Local resident from Pingtung county said, "The flooding is everywhere because the sewers are blocked by mud and debris, I am getting very angry and frustrated."

Some 30,000 households in southern and eastern Taiwan lost electrical power, while heavy rains closed scores of roads and bridges in the area. A number of southern and eastern counties shut down schools and offices and schools were also closed in Taipei, which escaped the brunt of the storm.

By Monday afternoon, many domestic flights had been canceled, although almost all overseas flights were operating normally.
