Taliban suicide fighters have launched an attack on central Kabul. They took over a multi-story building under construction near the diplomatic district in the Afghan capital. They then fired rockets in the direction of the US Embassy, NATO headquarters and other official buildings. Officials say at least 9 people were killed and 23 wounded.

Loud explosions were interspersed with gunfire through the early afternoon, and at least two rockets landed in the upmarket Wazir Akbar Khan district, home to the US, British and many other embassies.

Residents and shop owners there took cover.

A cigarette shop owner said, "The suicide bombers are on the building and are firing, as you can hear the explosions. So I escaped from my shop because it was near the site."

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack and said a number of suicide bombers were attacking Afghan and foreign soldiers at Abdul Haq Square closed to the US embassy and NATO-led ISAF headquarters.
