MUMBAI: Four people died and 11 people were taken ill after a gas leak from a chemical plant in the Tarapur MIDC area. The condition of three of the 11 was stated to be critical.

The incident occurred around 7.45 pm on Tuesday when hydrogen sulphide started leaking from the plant belonging to Sequent Scientific Limited located in the Boisar area. The gas first engulfed the plant area and then spread to an area of around 5 kilometres from the plant. The leak occurred in a condenser pipe at the plant situated around a dozen kilometres from the Tarapaur Atomic Power Plant, officials said.

The first to be affected by the leak were the workers at the chemical factory. Initial reports said the dead included factory supervisor Naresh Verma and contract labourers Binno Singh, Shivkant Tiwari and Prajapati.

Eleven others, mostly working at the same plant, were taken ill and were taken to a private hospital. Three of them were yet to regain consciousness at the time of going to print.

The plant is situated around a kilometre from the Boisar railway station. The area is populated with more than 1,250 factories and chemical plants but also has some residential areas. People staying in the vicinity were evacuated and the area was cordoned off.

Maharashtra Fire Services director M V Deshmukh said the local fire control was informed by local people and that too two hours after the incident. Plant officials told the fire brigade that they did not think of contacting firemen as there appeared to be no blaze and they thought that taking care of the ill was the priority.

Fire brigade officials reached the spot around 9.45 pm and they added that the leak had been contained.

The Boisar MIDC police has registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the firm.
