Ship fire kills 8, injures dozens in East Java, Indonesia

JAKARTA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) - The stampede in a passenger ship docking in a seaport in East Java of Indonesia killed eight people and wounded 63 others on Wednesday morning, rescuers and officials said.

The passengers of Kirana IX ship were panic and immediately rushed out of the ship when they found one truck got fire inside the ship, Head of Search and Rescue Office in East Java who goes with single name Sutrisno told Xinhua by phone.

Nevertheless, the fire did not cause any damages to the ship, said Sutrisno.

"Eight people were killed and tens wounded after being trodden by others during the escape from the ship," official at the Tanjung Perak seaport Pangestuti told Xinhua by phone.

She said that the accident took place as the ship was to depart from the seaport.

Manager at the nearby PHC Tanjung Perak Hospital Harry Setiawan told Xinhua by phone that as many as 63 victims of the fire had been rushed to the hospital.

"By this afternoon sixteen people have been treated at this hospital for their serious injury, four of them are being treated intensively at the insensitive care unit. All the injured persons, victims of the ship fire brought here are 63, most of the victims suffer from broken bone, bruise and lung problem because of being sunk," he said.

Head of the rescue office said that the fire had been stopped.

Rescuers have combed the waters around the seaport to find out whether any victim was still sunk in the waters as the authorities still could not confirm whether any people went missing, the rescuers said.

The accident is the sixth this month. On Monday a ferry was burned in a river in South Kalimantan that killed at least seven people, wounded 128 others and left 12 people missing after collision with tugboat pulling a ship loaded with coal.

Ship is a favorite transport means in the archipelago country with over 17,500 islands, but accident has frequently happened due to lacking of safety standard.

Previously, Indonesian Vice President Boediono has warned passenger ships to meet safety standard rules to avoid sea accident from happening.

The warning was made after Transport Minister Freddy Numberi reported that there were still some ships ignoring safety standard.
