RAMALLAH, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- The International Quartet for peace in the Middle East renewed their efforts to revive Israeli- Palestinian negotiations after a year of stalemate, Palestinian officials said Wednesday.

Representatives of the Quartet will start separate meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials to listen to the two sides' ideas to resume the negotiations.

The mediators, including the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations, will meet chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat in Jerusalem today. On Thursday, the diplomats will meet Yitzhak Molcho, an advisor to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Well-informed sources said that the Quartet's envoys will try to arrange for a meeting between Netanyahu and the Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The two leaders have not met since the peace talks collapsed last year.

However, for the Palestinians, the meetings with the Quartet representatives are unlikely to make progress on the efforts to revive the peace talks, given Israel's rejection to endorse the 1967 borders as the baseline for a two-state solution.

"We will tell the Quartet's envoys that we are sticking to the requirements of the resumption of peace discussions," said Nabil Shaath, a Palestinian negotiator.

He added that the Palestinian demands to restart the talks include recognizing the 1967 borders as the boundaries of the future Palestinian state and halting settlement activities inside these borders.

The Quartet resumed its efforts as the Palestinian leadership and the United States engaged in a diplomatic battle over the Palestinian bid to obtain recognition from the United Nations.
