New Zealand authorities say there are more cracks on a cargo ship stranded on a reef off the coast of the country and they are preparing for the boat to break apart.

Crews on board the vessel, Rena, are making all efforts to remove around nearly 400 tonnes of oil to prevent it leaking into the ocean. Maritime New Zealand says a team has attached the stern of the ship to a barge and will drag it to shallower water in case it breaks apart. More than 300 tonnes of oil has already leaked into the ocean since Rena became stranded on October 5th.

A handout photo taken on October 12, 2011 shows containers floating near the
grounded container ship 'Rena' in the Bay of Plenty near Tauranga. Officers from
a ship stuck on a New Zealand reef faced fresh charges Wednesday as fears were
raised the vessel was close to breaking up and could spill more oil, worsening
the environmental disaster.
