Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the accelerated construction of some 2,000 housing units in areas in the West Bank and around Jerusalem.

The statement came after Netanyahu called a special cabinet session to discuss the granting of full membership to the Palestinians by UNESCO. A senior government official says after the meeting, the cabinet has also decided to halt money transfers to the Palestinians Authority as a temporary measure until a final decision was made.

The Palestinians have slammed Israel’s decision on settlements, saying Israel has decided "to speed up the destruction of the peace process". A spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, has also described as "inhumane" Israel’s decision to temporarily halt transfers of funds to the Palestinian Authority.
