An October freak snowstorm has caused chaos in northeastern America.

The storm swept across Maryland to Maine. Over three million homes have experienced power cuts. Authorities say power may not be fully restored until next week.

The storm has caused at least 23 deaths. And a state of emergency has been declared in severely affected states, including Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Many schools have remained closed since Tuesday, and residents face long queues to fuel their cars and generators.

Shelters are crowded with elderly and disabled people seeking meals and a warm place to rest.
