Radioactive gas has been detected at Japan’s tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant, indicating latent problems with one of its reactors.

The presence of radioactive Xenon found in gas inside the reactor, could be the byproduct of unexpected nuclear fission. As a precautionary measure, boric acid has been injected through a cooling pipe to counteract nuclear reactions.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company says there was no rise in the reactor’s temperature, pressure or radiation levels to warn of a critical point when nuclear reactions become self-sustaining.

So the detection of xenon has no major impact on their efforts to keep the reactor cool and stable. No radiation leaks outside the plant have been detected.
