Campaigning is heating up ahead of Spain’s parliamentary elections. And unemployment and the eurozone crisis dominated the only scheduled debate between centre-right People’s Party leader Mariano Rajoy, and Socialist Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba.

Rajoy, who is expected to win the November 20th election by a wide margin, opened the debate by blaming the current Socialist government for Spain’s economic crisis. Rubalcaba, who is lagging badly in polls, fought back by trying to paint Rajoy as a threat to the welfare state.

However, with polls showing the People’s Party with a 17 percentage point lead, that is not expected to be enough to keep the Socialists in power. If he wins, Rajoy is widely expected to implement deep austerity measures in order to cut Spain’s public deficit and avoid needing a financial rescue. In the debate, Rajoy pledged not to freeze pensions but Rubalcaba failed to draw him on where he would make cuts.
