In Brazil, Rio de Janeiro authorities have called for punishment and more caution in offshore drillings after US oil giant Chevron spilled over 2,000 barrels off the state's shore.

At a news conference to foreign correspondents, Rio de Janeiro state Environment Secretary Carlos Minc says the country's rules should be followed, and exploring the vast reserves demands more care and planning. Brazil’s environment agency I-bama has imposed a multi-million dollar fine on Chevron. The country’s energy regulator ANP says the spill reached 200 to 330 barrels of oil per day at its height.

Chevron's Brazilian unit says it has sealed the well with cement and acted as responsibly as possible once it learned of the drilling. ANP has issued a statement suspending the drilling rights of Chevron in national territory until it clarifies the details of the spill.
