First stage of Egypt parliamentary elections closes

Ballot boxes have been sealed and taken away to counting centers after the first stage of voting ended in Egypt's parliamentary elections.

Long lines formed again at polling centers around Cairo and other cities on the second and final day of the first round of voting. The head of the election commission called the election turnout "massive and unexpected."

The generals who took power after Mubarak’s fall did not field any candidates.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed the first stage of elections as "an important step towards the establishment of civilian rule".

The elections will see two more stages in the remaining governorates and will end in January 2012. It is the first parliamentary poll after the fall of Hosni Mubarak in February and is held as anti-government protests continue.
