Workers have demonstrated in central Athens as a government program to lay off 30,000 civil servants came into effect. Workers also shouted against the government’s austerity program, which has included wage and pension cuts intended to reduce the debt. The 30,000 layoffs are part of an attempt by the government to reduce the huge civil service in Greece, which employs more than 730,000 workers and is a heavy cost to the state.

Greece is awaiting the release of the sixth tranche of its 2010 bailout loan as EU finance ministers are meeting in Brussels. It is expected the ministers will agree to the release of the funds after receiving a written commitment from Greek parties.

Under the agreement Greece will also receive another 130 billion euro bailout loan. Greece has funds until mid December and the loans are keeping it from going bankrupt. On Thursday, unions are planning another general strike .
