Britain withdraws embassy staff from Tehran

Britain is withdrawing some staff and dependants from its embassy in Tehran after it was stormed by Iranian protesters.

The embassy is now officially closed, although some diplomatic work is continuing. British Prime Minister David Cameron describes Tuesday’s attack as "outrageous and indefensible". He also says Iran’s failure to defend the embassy and its staff is a disgrace and will have "serious consequences."

Iranian protesters briefly took six British embassy staff hostage on Tuesday when they stormed two diplomatic compounds in Tehran in a protest against sanctions imposed by Britain.

Britain said it was outraged by the attacks on its embassy compounds, but had no immediate comment on the seizure of its staff. Full story>>
