Partial results from the first stage of Egypt’s parliamentary elections have been released.

The head of the election commission announced the results for three candidates who ran as independents, but did not present results for political parties, which put forward slates of candidates who will fill two thirds of seats in parliament’s lower house.

Abdel-Mooaez Ibrahim also announced that 62 percent of eligible voters turned out for casting the ballot. The first round of results had been expected on Thursday, but was delayed as some constituencies failed to complete their counts on schedule.

Preliminary results leaked by political groups show the Muslim Brotherhood is in the lead, having gained popularity by aiding the poor under Mubarak’s regime.

The second and third round of voting is scheduled to be held on December 14th, and early next year.
