A US trade panel has approved an investigation into charges of what a few US companies have called unfair Chinese trade practices in the solar energy sector.

The US International Trade Commission says it has found there was a reasonable indication US solar industry producers have been harmed by Chinese imports or face potential harm.

The vote allows the Commerce Department to continue an investigation into whether the Chinese government provides subsidies for its solar energy sector, and whether Chinese companies are selling solar cells and panels at unfairly low prices.

China has criticized the case as US protectionism, and has launched a counter-investigation of US programs which support the renewable energy sector.
