Bonn conference opens to discuss Afghanistan's future

Delegates from 85 nations and 16 international organizations have gathered in the German city of Bonn to discuss the future of Afghanistan. They will focus on the country’s economic future and Western presence.

Delegates met today to create a framework for self-sustaining Afghan peace and economic development.

Germany’s Foreign Minister called for international support for the reconstruction. He said they will continue giving aid to maintain stability after most foreign forces leave.

Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, said financial pledges from the international comminty are necessary for the government to stay committed to reconstruction.

NATO forces plan to leave the country by 2014. Organizers hope the conference will bolster long-term international engagement to support and protect Afghanistan.
