Mexico, Colombia and Central American nations have signed a letter of intent for a regional free trade agreement. The signing came Monday, at the opening of the 13th summit of the Tux-tla Mechanism of Dialogue and Coordination.

Host Mexican President Felipe Calderon says the agreement will create more commercial opportunities for the Central American states.

Besides its economic agenda, the summit will also address issues on regional security, and migration, as well as regional initiatives of institutional enforcement.

It will also discuss regional plans of integrated infrastructure, energy and telecommunications.

The Tux-tla mechanism was established in 1991. It’s considered one of the main forums for political dialogue between Central American nations.
