In Yemen, forces opposed and loyal to the outgoing president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, have pulled back from some positions in Taiz after a bout of fighting. At least 20 were killed in the battle.

As fighting raged on the streets of Yemen’s capital, the vice president issued a decree to set up a national unity government to prepare for elections. But the deal is threatened by the fighting between Saleh’s allies and oppositions.

On Tuesday the two sides had withdrawn from some positions they held. But clashes once again broke out on Wednesday in Taiz. The city’s security chief acknowledged the government forces caused some casualties, but he accused anti-Saleh fighters of extending the fight.

The Gulf Cooperation Council says they fear the struggle over Saleh’s fate could lead to chaos and embolden al-Qaeda’s Yemeni branch.
