China and the US held their 12th round of defense consultations Wednesday in Beijing in a bid to control risks and avoid misunderstandings between their militaries.

The US’s Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michelle Flournoy and Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian attended the talks. Both sides stated that Sino-US cooperation influences peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

during a bilateral meeting at the Bayi Building in Beijing Dec 7, 2011.

The consultations marked the first engagement between the defense ministries of both countries since the US announced in September its 5.85-billion-dollar arms sale to Taiwan, including upgrades for 145 of Taiwan’s fighter jets.

A researcher with the PLA’s Military Science Academy said although the consultations took place as scheduled, the issue of arms sales to Taiwan could not be evaded.
