United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced deep concern at rising the ethnic tension and deadly clashes in South Sudan's Jonglei state.

Thousands of armed Lou Nuer community youths attacked rival Murle communities on Tuesday, burning down homes and killing dozens of people. South Sudanese Vice President Riek Machar visited Likuangole on Wednesday, and called on Lou Nuer tribesmen to stop the violence.

In a UN statement, Ban Ki-moon called on regional leaders to work with the government to find a "long-term solution for the root cause of the hostilities."

Jonglei is one of 10 states in South Sudan, which became independent from Sudan in July.

The UN has estimated that fighting between the Lou Nuer and Murle communities in August killed about 600 people, wounded 850 and displaced 26,000.
