An explosion at a warehouse has destroyed homes and other warehouses in Myanmar's main city of Yangon, killing at least 17 people and injuring 73 others.

The explosion followed a blaze which lit the night sky and clouds of thick black smoke billowed from charred buildings.

Officials say the fire started in the state-owned warehouse before dawn. It quickly spread to nearby homes and buildings, many of them wooden before triggering the blast.

It completely destroyed nearly 90 houses and 10 warehouses. Three fire fighters are among those killed.

The cause is still under investigation.
