The Syrian foreign ministry says it deplores a US statement on the Arab League observer mission, which says the Syrian regime hasn't lived up to the full spectrum of commitments it made to the Arab League and that the violence hasn't stopped.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi accused the US of flagrant intervention, saying the remarks constitute an attempt to unwarrantably internationalize the Syrian crisis.

Observers are currently visiting central Homs, northern Idlib, and southern Daraa. But their presence has aroused controversy inside and outside of Syria.

Protesters accuse the observers of being biased towards the regime, and the Syrian government of playing cat and mouse, moving troops out of areas being monitored only to return when they’ve left.

Outside of Syria, an independent advisory body to the Arab League called over the weekend for the mission’s withdrawal, accusing them of doing more harm than good.

The Arab League chief responded on Monday, saying he remained optimistic. The organization has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the observers’ first report on Saturday.
