Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has won the Republican caucus in Iowa by the slimmest of margins, beating conservative rival Rick Santorum by just eight votes. It’s the first step for the Republican party to choose its candidate for this year’s US presidential election. The big surprise of the night was the strong showing by Santorum, given that he was polling in single figures just a few weeks ago.

Some people impassioned , some political professionals

And the turn around artists in this race is Mitt Romney

Some just saying what they think

Definitely moving on is Rick Santorum a come from behind campaign that played on face to face politics not money

Santorum’s supporter Jake Norman said: "How much has Mitt Romney had to spend for each vote in Iowa and how much has Rick Santorum had to spend, you know a lot of money has now come towards Rick but he has worked harder than all 5 candidates combined"

Rick Santorum’s electoral fortunes have been transformed overnight - but now it is onto the cold harsh realities of New Hampshire where his rival Mitt Romney has a 40 percent share in the polls.

Presidential candidate Rick Santorum said: “We have a much better ground game and a much better team in New Hampshire that I think anybody understands, we are not going to .. I have no allusions about winning New Hampshire but I think we are going to do well versus the rest of the pack.”

Q: are you now the official stop Romney candidate?

Rick Santorum said: "I think we are the candidate that Republicans have been looking for, the 75% of republicans that are still looking for a candidate that they can get behind and trust"
