Firefighters battle flames around Perth Airport

A major bushfire that was threatening lives and homes near Perth airport has been contained after firefighters worked through the night to contain the blaze.

The bushfire ripped through about 65 hectares in the suburb of Cloverdale, prompting the evacuation of residents of two streets.

Although the blaze is no longer out of control, it continues to smoulder on its eastern side and residents have been warned to remain alert to changing weather conditions. To the West, the fire has been completely extinguished.

Perth Airport officials said there were some delays to arrivals and departures. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
