Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has landed in Mana-gua ahead of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega's inauguration. Ahmadinejad called Ortega his "brother president" and Nicaragua a kindred revolutionary nation as he arrived for the ceremony.

Ahmadinejad drew parallels between the people of Iran and Nicaragua, saying they are "on the road to fight for the establishment of security and justice."

The two nations have forged strong ties since Ortega’s return to power in 2007, with Iran pledging to help the impoverished Central American country to fund a 350 million dollar port and to assist with an ambitious hydro-electric project.

Nicaragua is Ahmadinejad’s latest stop on a tour of four left-leaning Latin American nations that Washington says shows its "desperation" for friends.

Iran is facing its toughest ever economic sanctions from the United States and a trade embargo from the European Union, which currently buys about 20 percent of its oil output.
