Ahead of hosting the Iranian President, the government of Ecuador has offered its moral support to the Islamic Republic, pledging to ignore Western sanctions. In the capital, Quito, the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister called upon the United States to sanction US companies conducting businesses in Iran before trying to impose sanctions against other countries conducting business with Iran.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said: "I hope we don’t get sanctioned too. We are a sovereign country. We don’t have potato crops to be sanctioned against, you know. We can’t be punished because we misbehaved. The fact of the matter is that the U.S. companies based in Tehran ought to be the ones to be sanctioned. We also have the right to do business and have a relationship with Iran, haven’t we? Let me be clear, Ecuador would not accept any kind of sanctions against our nation due to our bilateral relations with Iran."
