Daniel Ortega has been sworn in for his third term as president of Nicaragua, despite opponents claiming his re-election illegal. He vows to carry out a moderate policy approach.

Ortega took the oath of office on Tuesday, in front of 8,000 people gathered at Revolution Plaza - the site where his Sandinista rebels celebrated the overthrow of dictator Anastasio Somoza in 1979.

Presidents from across Latin America attended the inauguration, along with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who's currently touring the region. Ortega's closest and most financially supportive ally, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, was at the ceremony, after hosting Ahmadinejad in Caracas.
