Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping and Vice Premier Li Keqiang have met visiting US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in Beijing. Closer coordination between the two countries on key international affairs and trade issues are the focus of today's talks.

Xi Jinping said Geithner's visit will definitely help boost stability and further development of economic and trade ties between the two countries in the year to come. He also said it was a positive step in the development of the Sino-US relations. Geithner conveyed US President Barack Obama's greetings to the Chinese Vice-President.

Xi is set to pay an official visit to the US in February. During his two-day trip to Beijing, Geithner will also discuss policies to promote global economic growth and efforts to support a level playing field for global trade.

In addition to trade cooperation, the stand-off over Iran's nuclear ambitions also features prominently on Geithner's agenda for his Asia tour.

The US Treasury Department says Geithner intends to discuss Washington's continued coordination with international partners in the Asia-Pacific region to increase pressure on Iran, including sanctions targeting the county's central bank.

Prior to talks with the Chinese Vice President, Geithner also met with Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang. He is scheduled to meet Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao later today.

Geithner is set to travel on to Japan on Thursday.
