Nigerian authorities have imposed a curfew in the central city of Minna in Niger state, as the strike against the removal of fuel subsidy entered its third day Wednesday.

Violence was reported by the Niger state government in which property was set on fire in the city and a police officer was killed. Hundreds of Nigerian soldiers have descended on the city to restore order.

fuel subsidies in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos January 11, 2012.

Demonstrations over spiraling fuel prices and corruption have turned violent in cities across Nigeria this week after the government made a highly unpopular decision earlier this month to end a subsidy program that had kept fuel costs low.

On the same day, the country’s oil union said it would make a decision late in the day to shut down production and export terminals.
