In Iraq, a suicide bomber disguised as a policeman has killed at least 53 people and wounded 130 others. The attack on Shi’ite Muslim pilgrims took place at a checkpoint in Basra, a major city in the southeast of the country.

The bombing comes at the end of Arbain, an important religious event in the Shi’ite calendar. It’s the worst incident so far this year, and comes amid a political crisis and renewed fears of resurgence of sectarian violence.

Security forces sealed off the main hospital in Basra, fearing further attacks as soldiers, police and civilians rushed blood-covered victims to the hospital. Hundreds of relatives packed into the city morgue searching for their loved ones. Scores of people have been killed in attacks on pilgrims in the last few weeks.
