In Taiwan, the incumbent leader and chairman of the ruling Kuomintang, has won the island’s leadership election.

Ma Ying-jeou, thanked his supporters at a large gathering held in the KMT headquarters in Taipei amid heavy rain. Meanwhile, at a press conference at the Democratic Progressive Party headquarters, Tsai Ing-wen spoke of her failure in the election and announced she would resign from her position as DPP chairwoman.

Ma Ying-jeou’s inauguration is expected to take place in May. But this will be his last stay in office, as Taiwan leaders can serve only two 4-year terms. Taiwan’s "legislative" election was also held Saturday, and the ruling Kuomintang has also won a majority in this elections, wining 64 seats in the 113-member seats.

Commenting on these results, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council says the results show that the path of peaceful development of cross-strait relations, taken over the past four years, is a correct way and has gained the support of the people.

He added Chinese mainland hopes Taiwan can achieve social stability and that its people can live happy lives. Finally, he says that on the basis of the 1992 consensus and opposition to Taiwan’s independence, the Mainland is ready to work with all parties in Taiwan to bring a new outlook to cross-strait relations, and work for the revitalization of China.
