Romanian police have fired tear gas during an anti-government protest in the nation’s capital. Saturday marked the third consecutive day of demonstrations against austerity cuts and falling living standards in the country.

More than 1,000 protesters rallied in Bucharest’s main University Square, blocking-off traffic. The demonstrators called for early elections and the resignation of President Traian Basescu. The ambulance service said 9 people had been treated for injuries.

The protests began after a popular health official Raed Arafat resigned in opposition to proposed government health reforms. Since then, the demonstrations have expanded from support for Arafat to general discontent with the government’s unpopular austerity measures.
