Retired General Otto Perez Molina has been sworn in as the President of Guatemala. Perez won over voters by pledging to crush criminality with what he called an "iron fist."

Perez is the first military officer elected as Guatemalan president since the end of a military government 25 years ago. He served in that administration as director of intelligence. At the inauguration ceremony on Saturday Perez called on the United States and Mexico to help him fight drug trafficking and violence.

Close advisers say Perez supports meeting the conditions set by the US Congress for restoring aid it eliminated in 1978. Large swatches of Guatemala's territory have been seized by Mexican drug cartel. A recent United Nations homicide report said "murders in the country are committed at a rate of 41 for every 100-thousand residents."
