This year's World Economic Forum has kicked off in the Swiss mountain resort city of Davos. Chairman Klaus Schwab and the President of Switzerland Doris Leuthard opened the forum with speeches.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also spoke at the opening of the Forum. She expressed determination to solve Europe’s debt crisis through greater political unity, but dashed hopes of a large injection of money for the region’s bailout fund.

Urging the European Union to act more like a central government for the region, she acknowledged that the countries that share the euro don’t have the "political structures" to make the common currency work properly.

Merkel said: "It has become clear, and that is at least as important, that we have difficulties with the competitiveness of some European countries. And it has become clear, and this is even more difficult to overcome, that especially in the areas where we have a common currency, in which the economic and monetary union is so far advanced that they have decided in favor of the euro, we are lacking political structures so that the whole can function correctly."
