The US Federal Reserve says it will not raise interest rates until at least late 2014, in an effort to support sluggish economic recovery. This is significantly later than investors had expected.

Without making major shifts to its outlook for the economy, the central bank categorized the unemployment rate as elevated, and said it expects inflation to remain at levels consistent with stable prices.

It depicts business investment as having slowed, downgrading its assessment from the December meeting.

The central bank said in a statement that economic conditions "are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least through late 2014".

And as part of an effort to provide more insight on its thinking to financial markets and the public, the Fed will later publish individual policy-makers’ projections for the appropriate path of the benchmark federal funds rate.
