Russia, Turkey meet to discuss Syria crisis

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says his country will stonewall any UN sanctions in Syria. He made the statement Following a meeting with Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu in Moscow.

The pair are also asking for a quick start to talks between the Syrian government and the country’s opposition.

But earlier on Tuesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Syria’s rejection of an Arab League peace plan has increased Turkey’s concerns. Davutoglu said his country attached importance to the efforts of the Arab League and has demanded that the Syrian government immediately halt the violence.

The US, the European Union, the Arab League and Turkey have all introduced sanctions against Syria in response to President Bashar Assad’s stance on the unrest that has left more than 5,400 people dead, according to UN estimates.
