Hundreds of thousands of people have gathered in Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant Flamengo neighbourhood to enjoy the last official day of the carnival season.

Crowds followed the the samba troupe "Orquestra Voa-dora" sound truck and moved to the beat of traditional carnival songs as well as jazz, rock and roll and reggae provided by dozens of costumed musicians.

Tuesday’s parade included performers on stilts as well as giant puppets. The "Orquestra Voa-dora" first started playing together during carnival season in 2008. The band plays all year long in several venues in the bohemian neighbourhood of Lapa as well as in Flamengo Park where they hold open-air rehearsals. Rio’s carnival season officially ends Tuesday night with the city’s Carnival Gay Ball.
