Nanjing in East China has said it would suspend official exchanges with the Japanese city of Nagoya after a more than 3 decades' friendly ties. This comes after the mayor of Nagoya denied the Nanjing Massacre that claimed the lives of 300,000 people.

Mayor Takashi said Monday that the Massacre "probably never happened" while meeting with a delegation from Nanjing.

The claim sparked public anger on Tuesday after the remarks were posted online.

Zhu Chengshan, president of the Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre said that it was "utterly shocking to hear a descendant of the Japanese invaders deny the atrocities of the Nanjing Massacre." He added that both the International Military Tribunal for the Far East and the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal convicted a group of war criminals after recognizing the event.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also contested Kawamura’s claim on Wednesday, saying it had serious ramifications for ties between the nations. China is lodging a solemn representation with Japan.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said: "We understand and support the Nanjing government’s decision to stop exchanges with Nagoya. This year marks the 40th anniversary of normalization of the China-Japan relationship. We hope Japan will work with China to promote bilateral ties at such an important moment."

The Nanjing Massacre occurred in December 1937 when Japanese troops occupied the then capital of China. More than 300,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians were believed murdered and thousands of women raped over the course of six weeks.
