China and Russia have voted against a United Nations Human Rights Council resolution on Syria.

The main United Nations human rights body was expected on Thursday to condemn the government of President Bashar al-Assad for violations in Syria that may amount to crimes against humanity. The 47-member Geneva forum resumed its debate on the Syrian situation on Tuesday. But the Syrian delegation appeared to boycott the talks. The Syrian seat remained empty on Thursday.

Gulf countries, backed by Turkey, the European Union and United States, have presented a resolution strongly condemning violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities. Britain has announced it’s pulling its diplomats out of Syria for security reasons, but is not breaking diplomatic ties with Damascus after months of violent political turmoil.
