The head of the Egyptian election committee says the country will vote on May 23 and 24 to elect its first president since Hosni Mubarak was toppled a year ago.

Faruq Sultan, Head of Egyptian Electoral Committee, said, "The first election in the country will be held from Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012 and Thursday, May 24th, 2012."

"Announcement of the first election’s result and notification of the winner of the Presidency of the Republic will be within three days starting from Wednesday, May, 23rd, 2012."

"Second election in the country for two days, Saturday, June 16th, 2012 and Sunday, June 17th, 2012."

"Announcement of the final result and notification of the winner of the Presidency will be Thursday, June 21st, 2012."

Sultan said there would be no international monitoring of the poll, which comes during a turbulent transitional period. Many Egyptian anti-military activists fear the military will try to cling on to power. But, according to the military’s initial timetable, the presidential election should not take place before a parliamentary-appointed panel finishes a new constitution to replace the one suspended after Mubarak’s ousting.

Military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi has called on parliament and the senate to meet on March 3 to elect the constitutional panel, but it is not clear whether it can finish its work before the start of the election.
