Clean up efforts continue in US tornado zone

US officials said on Sunday they soon hope to allow more volunteers into the southern Indiana towns hit hardest by devastating tornadoes that killed almost forty people in five US states. Rescuers are going door-to-door in rural areas to rule out the possibility greater casualties.

A volunteer coordination center is due to open on Monday in nearby Jeffersonville, where those who want to help out are being asked to register to be assigned tasks.

Some 2,800 homes and businesses were still without power on Sunday as utility crews continue to replace power lines and trim trees damaged in the storm.

A power company spokesman said it could take a week to rebuild the power infrastructure. The storms struck the states of Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.
