Officials in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward have organised a day of earthquake drills in schools, stations and public offices in the style of California’s simultaneous quake simulations.

More than 25 thousand people took part in Friday’s drills, which have long been a feature at public locations across the city. An organiser for California’s quake simulations, said the drills often fail to take into account workplaces and homes.

The US method encourages millions of people across the state to simultaneously "drop, cover and hold on", effectively sending a more widespread message. Japanese officials are looking to copy the method after last year’s massive quake caused city-wide chaos across.

On Sunday Japan will commemorate the one year anniversary of what it officially calls the "Great East Japan Disaster", with memorials throughout the nation.
