Annan meets Syrian President for ceasefire

Kofi Annan, the joint special envoy of UN and Arab League for Syria, has met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus to push for end to the year-long violence. Annan also plans to meet Syrian opposition and dissidents during his 24-hour trip.

The former UN chief called for a political solution, but the opposition says the time for dialogue is over.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday Annan’s main priority is to call for an immediate ceasefire from both sides.

Annan met with Arab League foreign ministers and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Cairo before flying to Damascus.
