In Middle East, the worst violence between Israel and the Gaza Strip in nearly a year is continuing for a fourth day.

Israeli war planes have struck yet more targets in the Gaza Strip as Palestinians continue to pound southern Israel with rocket fire. 25 people are reported to have died in the violence so far, all within Gaza.

The latest flare up between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip shows no sign of easing.

Most of those killed have been Palestinian militants, although some civilians have also died. Some Israelis have also suffered serious injuries, with the daily rocket attacks a constant threat to around a million people living near the Gaza border.

The exchanges began on Friday, after Israel targeted a top militant commander in Gaza, killing him in his car.

The violence is now following a familiar pattern, with rocket attacks from Gaza, met with Israeli airstrikes.

Previous exchanges in the Hamas-controlled enclave have usually ended after just a few days, with an informal truce.

But the Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad militant group, which is behind much of the rocket firing, said there’ll be no ceasefire this time around.

Gaza’s Hamas leadership, whose followers have so far avoided the fighting, says neighboring Egypt is working to find a solution. But they’re nonetheless sounding a defiant tone.

Hamas leader Sami Abu Zuhri said: "We in Hamas assure the right of our Palestinian people to defend themselves by confronting this aggression with all means available. All involved parties need to be bear responsible regarding these attacks."

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman says southern Israel has been on the receiving end of rocket fire for over a decade.

He warned that the current situation had all but killed off the possibility of territorial concessions to the Palestinians.

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said: "I have no intention to speak about the security and operational aspects of the current situation. However, from the political aspect, the ongoing rocket fire buries any chance of territorial continuity between Gaza, Judea and Samaria-the West Bank."

The violence has drawn international condemnation with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UN Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon both calling for restraint.

Hillary Clinton said: "Let me also condemn in the strongest terms the rocket fire from Gaza by terrorists into southern Israel, which continued over the weekend. We call on those responsible to take immediate action to stop these attacks. And we call on both sides, all sides to make every effort to restore calm."

France and Russia have also appealed for an end to the fighting, stressing the need to avoid civilian suffering.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Araby issued a statement in Cairo, condemning the Israeli raids and urging the UN Security Council to step in.
