The exiled Syrian opposition group, the Syrian National Council, is calling for military intervention by Arab and Western governments to help protect civilians from President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Speaking in Istanbul, a spokesman for the group called for humanitarian corridors to be set up as well as safe zones and a no-fly zone. He said the opposition group will begin arming the Free Syrian Army, which is made up of government defectors and that a coordinating bureau has already been established to deliver weapons.

But speaking on the same day, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the US does not believe further militarization of the situation in Syria will solve the conflict.
