Taliban insurgents attack Afghan delegation near massacre site

Taliban militants have opened fire on a delegation of senior Afghan officials as they visited the site of Sunday’s massacre of 16 civilians by a US soldier.

The attack took place as the officials met local people at a mosque in Balandi village in southern Kandahar province.

The delegation included two brothers of Afghan President Hamid Karzai, although both are reported to be unharmed. One Afghan soldier was killed, and two others were injured.

Tuesday’s attack came just hours after the Taliban threatened to behead American troops to avenge the killings. On Sunday, a US soldier opened fire in the village killing 16 civilians, mostly women and children.
